Best Albums of 2023

In the past few years, we dealt with Covid-related lockdowns and the start of a social uprising that inspired a great deal of ingenuity in the albums that were coming out at the time. In many ways, we returned to some sense of normalcy and, for better or worse, that transmitted through the records created this past year. It felt like, at times, some of the artists who created albums in 2023 didn’t have enough to say and reverted back to a tried-and-true format, instead of breaking new ground. Some top artists including Wilco, Mitski and Lana Del Rey had enjoyable yet predictable LPs. Of course, that’s not to say there weren’t standout exceptions this year. Jessie Ware’s “That! Feels Good!”—our No. 1 album of the year—is an example of the type of spunk and sexualized energy that could have only come from someone who finally, fully emerged from years of lockdown. On “Javelin,” we memorialized alongside Sufjan Stevens as he beautifully embodied his grief from losing his partner earlier this year. Rapper Billy Woods and producer Kenny Segal demanded our attention on “Maps.” Kelela innovated with the perfect mix of sultry R&B and dance beats on her second studio album, “Raven.” Caroline Polachek, who earlier in her career had sleeper hits including “Bruises” from her band Chairlift, solidified her solo standing as an indie pop darling with “Desire, I Want to Turn Into You.” And we got a raw glimpse into the mind of the late jazz trumpeter and composer Jaimie Branch through “Fly or Die Fly or Die Fly or Die (World War),” her fourth studio album released posthumously in August 2023, one year after her death. So, yes, 2023 is definitely a year worth listening to—below are our top 50 albums.
