James Blake Dazzles During First Show of Two-Night New York Terminal 5 Stay

James Blake performed two nights at New York’s Terminal 5 in support of his most recent release, Assume Form. The critically acclaimed album helped him sell out both nights at the 3,000-person venue in Hell’s Kitchen. It was his first New York showing since playing against headliner Jack White at Governor’s Ball Music Festival last year. Khushi was Blake’s opener during both nights of his Manhattan run.

The British darling opened the first night’s set with Assume Form’s opening self-titled track. As quiet and deliberate as his music is, it seemed as though Blake was building something important throughout the night and delivering it with caution. Blake’s onstage persona has showed little change throughout his career so far but what was different about this show than in years past was the crowd’s clear excitement and participation, reciting his lyrics back to him. Most of the set leaned heavily on Assume Form, which is one of his most accessible and easy-to-listen-to albums in his discography. Of course, he did play some gems from his previous album, The Colour in Anything, including “Timeless” and “Love Me Whatever Way,” plus hits off his 2013 LP, Overgrown, such as “Life Round Here,” “Retrograde” and “Voyeur.” Highlights of the night included his performance of earlier cuts from his self-titled album, “The Limit to Your Love” and “The Wilhelm Scream,” which was the set closer. Blake then graced the audience with an encore that spanned the hauntingly beautiful “Don’t Miss It” and final closer “Lullaby For My Insomniac,” which also is the song that rounds out Assume Form.

All around, the performance made for a great evening with the multi-instrumental genius. Blake was easily able to keep the momentum going over the 17-song set. At one point, he also made sure to point out that he has playing with the same musicians since they were just kids. Their synergy was undeniable. The confidence and precision each member on stage delivers is exiting to be a part of.
